GATE  TEST

All students applying for Gifted and Talented Secondary Selective Entrance (GATE) programs must sit the Academic Selective Entrance Test (ASET)

Intense competition - 1548 students competing for 225 spots in Perth

Less than 50 Seconds to Answer a Multiple Choice Question.

Will your child be in the 85% that miss out?

What is the GATE exam?

The Academic Selective Entrance Test (ASET) presents a formidable challenge, with only 15% of the 1548 students who sit the exam securing admission to Perth Modern School – the sole fully selective academic institution in Western Australia. This same test serves as the gateway for students aiming to enrol in the GATE (Gifted and Talented Secondary Selective Entry Program) across 18 select public schools in WA.

Each year, the exam becomes increasingly difficult and competitive. The aggregate cut-off for selection has risen (by 10.33 points in 2019), and according to reports by The West Australian, Education Department data indicates a staggering 30% surge in the overall number of students competing for places in gifted programs over just four years, climbing from 3631 to 4756.

This means your child needs thorough preparation.

Typically, students take the exam in Grade 6 for Year 7 entry, with testing usually occurring in early March and results typically released between late May and early June.

On the date of the exam, your child should be outstanding in maths and English as a base to feel confident for their exam. They need exam technique such as how to answer questions quickly and having a structure they can use when it comes to writing. With the very strict time limits, students who are naturally gifted have sometimes missed out to children who weren’t so intelligent, but were prepared.

What's in the GATE/ASET Test?

There are four prerequisite parts to this competitive exam that your child must undertake:

While practice questions are undeniably valuable, it is vital that students understand the best approach to particular question types by acquiring sufficient knowledge and building a strong foundation. Our goal is to enhance the speed and accuracy of a student while also boosting their confidence in their abilities.

Providing an opportunity to partake in two mock tests per term, we empower students to familiarise themselves with exam conditions and questions, and receive invaluable feedback.

Benefits to preparing early

1. Time for Comprehensive Preparation:

Beginning early allows ample time to cover all the necessary topics thoroughly, reducing the need to rush through concepts closer to the exam date.

2. Familiarization with Exam Format:

Early preparation gives students time to become familiar with the format of the GATE exam, including its structure, types of questions, and time constraints. This familiarity can help reduce anxiety and improve performance on the actual test day.

3. Identification of Weak Areas:

Early preparation allows students to identify their weak areas and focus on improving them. They can spend more time on challenging topics and seek help if needed, leading to a more well-rounded preparation.

4. Incremental Learning:

Starting early allows for a gradual and incremental learning approach, where students can pace their studying according to their understanding and comfort level. This can lead to better retention of information and a deeper understanding of concepts.

5. Opportunity for Revision and Practice:

Early preparation provides opportunities for regular revision and practice. Students can review previously learned concepts periodically and engage in practice tests to assess their progress and identify areas that need further improvement.

6. Reduced Stress:

By starting early, students can spread out their preparation over a longer period, reducing stress and pressure as the exam date approaches. This can lead to a more balanced and effective study routine.

Starting GATE preparation at ACADEMIS early can greatly enhance the chances of success by providing ample time for comprehensive learning, familiarization with the exam format, and targeted improvement in weak areas, while also reducing stress and anxiety associated with last-minute cramming.
